Photography / Visual Direction

Doruk Seymen has worked in photography since 2006, moving from fashion and portrait editorials to documentary projects, Web3 exhibitions and, today, visual direction and creative consultancy.

1982–2006

Born in Istanbul in 1982, Doruk Seymen completed his education in Eskişehir. In the early years of his career, he worked in photography and visual design within advertising agencies. He began his professional photography career in 2006 and later pursued formal photography training at the New York Institute of Photography (NYIP).

2010

In 2010, Seymen began working with the Doğan Burda Magazine Group, focusing increasingly on portrait and fashion photography. During this period, he photographed numerous local and international models, actors, and public figures, while producing fashion and portrait editorials as well as visual projects for a range of brands.

2016

In 2016, following his documentary work on Syrian refugees, he presented his solo exhibition From Syria to Gaziantep: Dom and Abdal at the Council of Europe headquarters in Strasbourg. The project was awarded second prize in the international Lost Rights, Found Justice? competition organized by the Human Rights Consortium at the University of London. He has since continued to contribute to various social responsibility projects, exploring the documentary and social dimensions of photography.

2021

In 2021, Seymen expanded his photographic practice into Web3, exhibiting his work in digital exhibitions around the world and connecting with an international community of collectors. This marked a further development in his creative practice, bringing traditional photography into dialogue with new forms of digital production and exhibition.

Today

Seymen’s practice has since grown beyond photography into visual direction, visual strategy, and creative consultancy. He works with brands and organizations on visual identities, creative direction, and the visual language of their content and communication, bringing together photography, moving image, design, and emerging production technologies.

Sound

Alongside his visual practice, music has long been an integral part of Seymen’s personal world. As an audiophile and vinyl collector, his relationship with music extends beyond listening to encompass recording, physical formats, album artwork, visual culture, and sound systems. Built over many years, his record collection has developed into a personal archive shaped by the same attention to aesthetics and detail that informs his relationship with photography and the visual arts.

Photography is not merely the act of fixing an image; it is a gesture of memory, a thought cast against the current of time. What animates it is neither the machine nor the light alone, it is the photographer’s intellectual agility, emotional depth, and visual imagination. The camera is merely a vessel. It carries the burden of human presence, the trace of time, and the invisible weight of feeling.

Each photograph is, in essence, an open letter to the future. Though seemingly still, it holds the vibration of a moment. It is a threshold where time freezes and whispers into eternity.

Photography is a shared language among humans, detached from words, yet never severed from meaning. But to speak this language, possessing a camera is not enough. Even the most sophisticated device remains mute if the hand that holds it does not possess the discipline to listen. For this language speaks only to those who can hear beyond the visible.

Amid the industry’s loud, materialistic outcry, to hear the spiritual voice of photography is to choose meaning over spectacle.

A good camera merely makes you a user. To be a good photographer demands mastery of the craft. But to be a photographic artist is something else entirely. It is not only to master, but to dare to say something the world has not yet heard. It is not just to see, but to construct a way of seeing.
